The Times Union in Albany, New York, announced today that it has received 24 combined awards from New York–based organizations promoting journalism.

The Times Union punctuated its haul June 7 with the 2022 Gabe Pressman Truth to Power Award, presented at the New York Press Club’s Annual Journalism Awards and Installation dinner in Manhattan. The award honors a journalist or news team “whose body of work challenges the power establishment and/or defends journalists.”

The Press Club gave the Truth to Power Award to the Times Union’s staff for reporting on abuses of power by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Casey Seiler, editor-in-chief of the Times Union, and Brendan Lyons, managing editor overseeing the Capitol Bureau and investigations, accepted on behalf of the paper.

The Times Union joins an elite list of past recipients, which includes New York Times Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Nikole Hannah-Jones, creator of The 1619 Project; CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta; New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, whose investigations helped spark the #MeToo movement; and former Washington Post editor-in-chief Martin Baron.

“It’s an honor to receive this recognition from a storied organization with a history of fighting for the rights of reporters,” Lyons said. “I’m lucky to work alongside assistant journalists in a newsroom that strives to be fair and thorough, and to hold public officials accountable.”

The Times Union also received 11 awards from the New York News Publishers Association and 12 from the New York Press Association.

Accolades from the New York News Publishers Association included Distinguished Breaking News Coverage for the Times Union’s handling of Gov. Cuomo’s resignation in August; Distinguished News Supplement for the paper’s Black History Month section; Best Features Supplement for the summer 2021 edition of Upstate Traveler; and Distinguished News Photography for images — captured by Paul Buckowski with contributions from Lori Van Buren, Rob Gavin and Eduardo Medina — of the clearing of an activist encampment outside the Albany Police Department’s South Station.

The New York News Publishers Association also honored the Times Union for column writing, blogging, sports and features photography, photo gallery presentation, headline writing, and page design.

New York Press Association awards included Best News Website (first place); Investigative In-Depth Reporting (first place) for Massarah Mikati and Medina’s five-part series “A City Divided,” a deep dive into the history and impacts of racial inequity in Albany; Editorials (first place) for a series of “gutsy” and “well-argued” pieces by Jay Jochnowitz; and Art Photo (first place) for Buckowski’s bucolic image of a recreational fisherman.

The Times Union received first-, second- and third-place awards from the press association for education, sports, news and feature reporting, as well as column and newsletter writing.

“Journalists are stewards of the public trust. That comes with a responsibility to hold those in power to account. I’m proud to say we’ve done our job,” Seiler said. “Resourcefulness and dedication to the work — at every desk, on every beat — define our newsroom. Congratulations to my colleagues and thank you to the Times Union’s readers, whose support makes our work possible.”
