The last snowfall since 1889 has fallen at Albany International Airport

ALBANY: Just call it White Friday.

The first snowflakes of the winter season were observed at Albany International Airport on Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Albany, making it the penultimate snowfall for Albany.

The most recent very first snowfall recorded in Albany occurred on November 27, 1889, well over a century ago.

Friday dusting comes almost a full month after the first flakes fell on October 30th last year, according to the National Weather Service.

And the last time the first snowfall of the season dragged on through mid-November was the 2007-2008 winter season, with the first measurable snowfall recorded on November 16.

While flakes have fallen at higher altitudes this season, including the Rensselaer Plateau, Albany International Airport last reported snowfall on April 22nd.

Only traces of snow were observed on Friday at 3:45 p.m., but total amounts can accumulate, especially at higher altitudes. The Rensselaer Plateau and southern Vermont can see between 6 and 12 inches as of late Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

“We’re expecting some snow almost everywhere tonight,” said Dan Thompson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Thompson said above-average temperatures are forecast for the region this winter, according to the Federal Climate Prediction Center, which made no predictions about the amount of snowfall. However, that does not mean that the northeast will be spared the traditional winter weather, he said.
