Several 5-star targets in the mix for No. 1 in the overall ranking

A five-star basketball goal from Syracuse is currently the # 1 consensus in the 2023 cycle, according to some recent comments from experts.

At this point, New Jersey five-star point guard DJ Wagner will be ranked # 1 nationwide by all primary recruiting services in 2023.

Wagner, a junior at Camden High School in Camden, NJ, received a “Cuse Offer” at the team’s annual elite camp in August. Kentucky and, more recently, Memphis are becoming increasingly popular for Wagner.

While many national analysts and recruiting insiders believe Wagner absolutely deserves the # 1 rating, I’ve also seen some other prospects for 2023 as serious contenders for that position. Some of them have ‘cuse connections that we’re going to investigate.

Numerous basketball prospects from Syracuse are at the top of the 2023 ranking.

Perhaps the biggest competition for Wagner could be five-star striker Kwame Evans Jr. from Baltimore, who recently accepted an offer from Orange.

Evans, a junior at the high-performing Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida, is ranked # 2 nationwide according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

The five-star guard / wing Matas Buzelis, which was offered by Syracuse Basketball almost a year ago, has moved up to the top five overall, according to 247Sports. He is a junior at Moloch Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, NH

As we have documented lately, all of the Blue Blood programs and many other large college teams have either offered or are interested in Buzelis.

One of the hottest 2023 players in the last few months is five-star power forward GG Jackson, who recently rose to the top 10 in the country according to multiple recruitment services.

Jackson, a junior at Ridge View High School in Columbia, SC, secured a ‘Cuse Scholarship Offer in August 2020, and it was the first offer when he was hired. His list of offers is ridiculously long.

One curiosity I have this season is the 2023 class.

We at @RivalsHoops have DJ Wagner in 1st place – there was a consensus & he should be there

My curiosity surrounds 2 specific types

Can Matas Buzelis or Gregory Jackson see enough of their advantages to fight for 1st place?

Last but not least, five-star small forward Justin Edwards recently posted the largest rankings rise in the entire class in 2023, according to updated reviews from 247Sports.

Edwards, who was offered basketball by Syracuse last summer, is a junior at the Imhotep Institute Charter High School in Philadelphia. He jumped into the top 10 nationwide, and they say he hears a lot from UConn and Kentucky, among others.

Of course, it would be encouraging if the Orange could win at least one of these guys, but it won’t be easy. Regardless, I think it’s pretty cool that the ‘Cuse is targeting a lot of prime prospects in the 2023 cycle.
