Selden woman killed after compact SUV overturns in Yaphank, young daughter avoids injury

Police are investigating a fatal nighttime accident that killed a Long Island woman.

It happened around 1:20 am on Sunday January 22nd in Yaphank.

The woman was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer with her 1-year-old daughter as a passenger on the William Floyd southbound ramp to Express Drive North when she lost control of the vehicle, crashed through a chain link fence, overturned and went off road in the woods Road to a standstill, Suffolk County Police said.

The woman, identified as Fay Vella, 41, of Selden, was pronounced dead by a paramedic from the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office at the scene, police said.

Her daughter was taken to Riverhead’s Peconic Bay Medical Center, where she was evaluated and turned over to a family member.
