Monday on Long Island started with temperatures climbing to nearly 90 degrees, and then thunderstorms ripped through parts of the region leaving damage on streets and injuring a man.
John Sullivan, North Hempstead Town Highway Maintenance Supervisor, said about 25 to 30 calls were received by the town for storm damage in Roslyn and Searingtown.
“The neighbors told us it got very dark and very loud and then everything just started falling down,” Sullivan said Monday.
Nesar Ahmed of Roslyn said he received a photo via text message from his wife of storm damage near their house.
“I’m feeling very lucky that it didn’t hit my house,” he said.
In Suffolk County, a 26-year-old man was treated for minor injuries to his leg and foot Monday after lightning struck a tree in the backyard of a home on Grace Park Drive in Commack and went into his leg, Suffolk police said. He was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital after the 2:05 pm incident.
A reprieve from showers and thunderstorms will come Tuesday with sun and temperatures in the mid-80s on Long Island, followed by slight chances of rain for the rest of the week, forecasters said.
Tuesday will be partly sunny with a high of about 84 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Weather Service. A north wind is expected to blow at 6 to 8 mph and shift to coming out of southwest in the afternoon.
A high rip current risk is in effect through 9 pm Tuesday for ocean beaches in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
There will be a slight chance of showers Tuesday night when the low temperature is expected to be around 70 degrees.
On Wednesday there will be a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 am and also a slight chance of showers after 2 pm, the weather service said. The high temperature should be near 83 degrees.
Thursday is expected to be partly sunny with a high around 87 degrees.
Meanwhile, although there’s a small chance of showers and thunderstorms overnight Thursday into Friday, temperatures are expected to reach into the 80s with no showers, the weather service said.
