JD Davis starts off with another homer from Syracuse and returns to the New York Mets

Syracuse, NY – JD Davis crowned his offensive show with the Syracuse Mets with a final encore on Wednesday night.

The rehabilitating third baseman crushed a homer in Game 1 of a double header against Rochester at NBT Bank Stadium. After the game, he said he would fly to New York tonight, train on Thursday and go to the Mets in Pittsburgh on Friday for the start of the second half of the season.

“It will be fun. It will be a blast. It’s like an open house,” he said on Wednesday evening.

Davis’ homer finished a sizzling July stretch in which he hit .370 with three homers and six RBIs in 10 games with Syracuse. Davis is returning from a hand injury that put the start of his New York season on hold after hitting .390 in the first 14 games.

“I don’t know if I can hit .390 all the time. But I can just go there and have professional thugs and contribute to the team and that’s all I can do, ”he said. “It was more about getting my swing back under me and my legs, my timing and so on. It was basically like spring training here to get at least 40 at-bats, or whatever the case may be. I am happy, my body feels great. Let’s get that thing rolling on Friday. “

Davis’ work in Syracuse went well beyond the original plan. He first arrived on May 18, but had to retire after four games due to complaints. Davis sat out until he got back on the team on July 1.

“The first time I played through some pain. I tried to stamp it out, but it only got worse, ”he said. “We did our thing, consulted with some doctors and got some advice just to turn it off and get the strength and stability back into my hands. And this time it was more about getting my timing back without pain or discomfort. “

Davis will return to a Mets team that rose to the top of the NL East with 3.5 games ahead of Philadelphia.

“The team is perfectly positioned. We stepped on the water, so to speak, and stayed afloat at the same time, ”he said. “These guys up there deserve all the credit they can. And hopefully the ship is already in the right direction and so we just have to keep pushing forward and make a really good push in the second half. “
