Coronavirus Updates: Data shows a surge in care home deaths in Connecticut

NEW YORK (WABC) – A dozen care home residents have died of COVID-19 in Connecticut in the past two weeks, the highest number since mid-August, new data released Friday showed.

According to the Ministry of Health, there were 125 positive cases of COVID-19 among residents between November 10 and November 23, with 12 deaths. 67 employees also tested positive in the same period. Five of these deaths occurred at the Candlewood Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in New Milford, which reported 36 positive cases among its 105 residents and eight positive cases among its staff.

The last time more than a dozen care deaths were reported in a two-week period was between August 18 and 31. At that point there have been 16 deaths from COVID-19 among nursing home residents, 111 positive cases among residents and 94 cases among employees.

Connecticut plans to hold refresher clinics in nursing homes
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has announced that the state is stepping up efforts to vaccinate elderly residents with a COVID-19 booster by moving specialized clinics to nursing homes. The move takes place because the state has had the highest infection rates since the beginning of September. Lamont encourages anyone eligible to have a booster vaccination. While 84% of residents aged 18 and over are considered fully vaccinated, only 18% have received a booster vaccination.

De Blasio calls on Governor Hochul to introduce a Vax mandate for MTA employees

“The unionized workforce of the MTA and millions of passengers in local transport are grateful this Thanksgiving that Mayor de Blasio does not operate the subway and bus system – and is finally walking out the door,” said Utano. “The current system, which gives transit workers the choice of being vaccinated or having regular tests, works while we educate members and encourage them to get the vaccination.”

Erie County introduces internal masks mandate
With positivity rates rising, Erie County introduced masking requirements for all indoor public spaces starting at 6 a.m. Tuesday. The inner masks mandate is the first phase of a four-phase plan. Erie County hopes it won’t have to go through the other stages, which include vaccinations, capacity constraints, and shutdowns.
Gov. Kathy Hochul praised the Erie County’s executive for taking strong local action and citing them “an example of the leadership we need to see local to combat this deadly virus.”
