2 charged with attempted murder after a man was shot dead during a robbery in Syracuse

Syracuse, NY – Two men accused of participating in a robbery that resulted in a shooting this fall are now charged with attempted murder, according to the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office.

Jay R. Harp Jr., 45, and Eric Harp, 24, both from Syracuse, are accused of participating in a robbery on September 21 at 5:15 pm at 723 W. Onondaga St. in the city of Syracuse.

In the course of the robbery, a 46-year-old man was shot in the hand and buttocks in front of the Roxy apartments on West Onondaga Street, police and prosecutors said.

The shooting victim was treated and released at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

Syracuse police were investigating the robbery, which turned into shootings.

Eric Harp was taken into custody on October 21, according to prison records. He is being detained at the Onondaga County Justice Center without bail on charges of attempted murder, attempted robbery, attempted reckless endangerment and criminal weapon possession, among other things.

Eric Harp is due to appear in County Court Tuesday to answer the charges, which are based on incidents in Syracuse on September 21 and October 21, 2021, records show.

Prosecutors have indicted Eric Harp and Jay Harp Jr. after the robbery that turned into a shootout, records show. First Assistant District Attorney Joseph Coolican said he did not know whether or how the harps are related. However, Coolican confirmed that both men were co-defendants of the September 21 robbery / shooting at W. Onondaga St.

Jay R. Harp Jr. was arrested on indictments last Tuesday, December 28, and charged the next day, Coolican said. He is due to appear in the district court on Monday to answer multiple charges, including attempted murder, first degree robbery, first degree assault and second degree criminal possession of guns, all crimes.

State prison records show that a man with the same name and date of birth as Jay R. Harp Jr. was convicted of first degree rape in March 1998, five months after he and two others were charged with bondage, robbery and gang rape – two young women from DeWitt, which they then wandered around in a remote area of ​​the Onondaga Nation in October 1997. The prison records indicate that Jay Harp was also convicted of grossly molesting an employee by an inmate. Harp was released from prison in December 2019 but remains on the state sex offender registry, records show.
