Crossgates Commons in Albany NY is fully stocked with a supermarket on the first floor, discount department stores on the second floor, and even a dedicated shopping cart escalator to help you navigate between the two!”, the

“The store is easy to understand once you get over the initial surprise. There is groceries downstairs and pretty much everything else (clothes, electronics, toys, cars and the garden center) is upstairs. Because the store is built into a hill over there, there’s an entrance on the second floor, and on the first floor, the

“To help customers move between floors, the store has elevators and a shopping cart escalator (or, as it’s more commonly known, a “cartalator”) that moves shopping carts alongside the normal passenger escalator. John continues to share this years after the store had two tiers, people came just to see the cartalizer. “They came just amazed. ‘Ooh, look at that,'” he laughs.

“Fun fact about the Cartalator (pictured above): It requires special carts that don’t have a bottom shelf for bulky items to attach to the lift.”
