New York State In-depth

The urban legend of the bodies buried in Washington Park, Albany

It is not disputed that Washington Park in New York’s capital Albany was once a cemetery. Where guesswork and urban legends come into play is that some say bodies are still there.

Albany.org says the land was known as the State Street Burying Grounds prior to the establishment of Washington Park and allegedly housed 40,000 bodies, many with unmarked graves. You can’t put a park on top of the dead, so the graves had to be moved. How do you move so many bones without losing a few? According to locals, some of the bodies remained.

During my investigation, I visited the Albany Rural Cemetery to take some photos. Check out this picture I took and see if you spot anything scary before you scroll any further.

Now let me zoom in for you.

It seems to me that there is a face on this tombstone that is watching me take photos. Keep scrolling to see what else I could “dig up”.
