The ribbon cutting ceremony for the East End grocery store coming soon

RIVERHEAD, NY – A popular indoor market is celebrating its new home in Riverhead with a ceremony this week.

The East End Food Institute will be hosted by the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce and members of the Riverhead Town Board on Friday at 3 p.m. to mark the opening of the East End Food Market at 139 Main Road in Riverhead – the long-time home of today’s shuttered homeside florist and greenhouses.

According to the organizers, the central location is a boon for day-trippers and residents of the area on both the North and South Forks, “who want to experience and enjoy the bounty of the East End.”

Previously held on Main Street in downtown Riverhead in the now demolished Swezey’s building, the market will be held between 9am and 1pm on Saturdays through April 30th.

“The pandemic has seen a surge in popularity and interest in local food, so we knew we needed to bring the indoor market back and we are excited about this location,” said Kate Fullam, executive director of the East End Food Institute. “The building was a perfect canvas for local artist Kara Hoblin, and her paintings on the outside really show the abundance inside.”

Every Saturday, the market features a variety of offers and entertainment from more than 40 local farms and food companies, wine tastings from a rotating list of wineries sponsored by Long Island Wine Country, educational opportunities from area nonprofits, crafts and local art dealers, and Live music, said the East End Food Institute.

Customers can pre-order local goods here and pick them up at the market every weekend or shop in person.

“The variety of companies and entrepreneurs who choose to do business in Riverhead is more than exciting. Having the support of our local growers and manufacturers is simply the best way to keep this community strong and thriving, and the East End Food Market makes it very convenient to do just that. Added Liz O’Shaughnessy, Executive Director of the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce.

Riverhead Town Supervisor Yvette Aguiar said the market is a wonderful way for the community to support local businesses while enjoying music and fun activities.

“The entire community is happy that this project is coming to fruition. I look forward to supporting our new farmers market, ”she said.

The East End Food Market will also accept the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Double Up Food Bucks, a new program for Suffolk County designed to help SNAP-registered customers buy fresh, locally grown food, organizers said.
