The Most Iconic Sports Moments in Albany, New York History

“Albania has a sports history?”

That was a real question asked on our Facebook page yesterday. It surprised me a little, but when I read it I started digging.

As it turns out, the Albany area not only has a rich sports history, it also has one of the most unique sports stories of any market I’ve ever seen.

The Albany Patroons won several titles in the CBA in the 1980s, teams with multiple players and coaches play in the NBA. The Albany River Rats mixed young and old to win a Calder Cup, TWO (2) iterations of the Albany Empire won championship titles, and the Knickerbocker / Pepsi / Times Union Arena / Center was the backdrop for countless other memories.

So I went to Facebook and asked you, what is the most iconic moment in Albany sports history?

Here is what you said.
