The Attorney General of New York nominates the Ethics Panel

New York Attorney General Letitia James has nominated an Albany Law School professor to join New York’s newly formed Lobbying and Ethics Commission.

James has recruited Ava Ayers to serve on the Lobbying and Government Ethics Committee, a successor to the Joint Public Ethics Committee, her office announced Monday.

“A strong, independent body dedicated to ensuring ethical behavior in the New York state government needs commissioners who uphold the ideals of public service,” said James. “That’s why I’m proud to nominate Ava Ayers for the New York Commission on Ethics in Lobbying and Government. Ava has helped educate future leaders about government, law and public policy, and has served the cause of justice at both the state and federal levels. I am confident that Ava will proudly serve our state in this new role and lead efforts to restore public trust.”

Ayers is a former Clerk of the Court Sonia Sotomayor when she served as a judge for the US Circuit Court of Appeals and for Judge Gerard Lynch in the Southern District of New York. Ayers has been with Albany Law School since 2016 and was the principal of the school’s Government Law Center for five years.

Nominees for the panel must be approved by a panel of deans of the state law school. The commissioners are appointed by the governor, the legislative leaders, the attorney general and the state auditor.
