Syracuse Crunch falls in overtime against Utica Comets

SYRACUSE, NY — The Syracuse Crunch was defeated 3-2 in overtime by the Utica Comets Saturday night at the Upstate Medical University Arena.

Despite the loss, the Crunch get a point as they move up to 18-13-3-3 in the season and hold a 4-0-1-0 lead in the 14-game season series against the Comets.

Goaltender Kaden Fulcher saved 29 of 32 shots in his crunch debut. Akira Schmid stopped 28 of 30 between the whistles for the Comets.

Syracuse remained scoreless on two power play opportunities while Utica went 1-4.

The Crunch was first on the board at 4:01. Simon Ryfors fired a shot from the slot that deflected Schmid for his team-leading 15th of the season. Two minutes later, the Comets responded with a shorthandy goal to equalize when Ryan Schmelzer fired a rebound during a scramble in front of the net.

Utica took the lead 7:59 into center frame after a shot from Graeme Clarke as he came down the slot on the power play.

Syracuse came back to knot the result early in the third period to eventually force overtime. Jack Thompson fired a wrister from the right circle while Gabriel Dumont had Schmid checked.

Nolan Foote scored the game winner for the Comets just 12 seconds into overtime to take the win.

The Crunch and Comets will face off for the third straight game in Syracuse on Friday.
