Suffolk County hosts Smith Point Bridge Rebuilding Forum

SHIRLEY, NY — Suffolk County officials will host an informational forum on the Smith Point Bridge replacement project on January 18 in the William Floyd High School auditorium.

Officials have billed the forum, which is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., as a “construction awareness information session.” It will present County Executive Steve Bellone, Legis. James Mazzarella, Director of Public Works, Joseph Brown, and a project consultant from Hardesty and Hanover.

The bridge was constructed in the 1950’s and connects Shirley’s south shore to Fire Island National Seashore and Smith Point County Park.

Construction to replace the bridge with a permanent bridge will begin in mid-2024, roadandbridges.com reported.

The new bridge will have a 55-foot riser, a more than 300-foot-long accessible fishing dock below, and an overlook, the outlet reported.

The project will also include new recreational spaces and bathrooms for the park, according to the outlet.

The high school is located at 240 Mastic Beach Road in Mastic Beach.
