The heavy rains that hit the region overnight from Tropical Storm Elsa are expected to subside by late morning, according to the National Weather Service.

A tropical storm warning and flash flood watch remain in effect until noon. Up to two inches of rain should fall this morning, officials said.

So far, the persistent rain has had the greatest impact on the region, although strong winds further east were a factor, according to the NWS.

In Riverhead Town, Sound Avenue between Hulse Landing Road in Wading River and Fresh Pond Road in Calverton has been closed due to flooding, police said. The lock should last until the early afternoon. It was the only reported closure on the North Fork as of 9.30am

In Southold Town, Highway Superintendent Vincent Orlando said a handful of trees had fallen and they heard reports of local flooding.

“All streets in the city are passable,” he said.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution this morning as aquaplaning is possible on roads some of which have started to jam, the NWS said.

PSEG-Long Island reported outages at 6:30 a.m. that affected fewer than 1,000 customers, but none on the North Fork. Most of the outages in Suffolk County were to the west and closer to the South Shore, according to a PSEG-LI outage map. PSEG said it restored power to more than 9,500 customers overnight.

Sustained winds of around 17 to 24 mph are expected this morning with gusts over 30 mph, but conditions should improve before noon as the rain mostly subsides. According to the NWS, there is a predicted maximum temperature of around 82 degrees for Friday.

The sun is expected to return on Saturday morning, although it can rain at times on weekends when temperatures are expected to be between the high 70s and low 80s.
