Introducing Apple Watch Ultra

Inspired by the most intense activities, Apple unveils a revolutionary new design with revolutionary capabilities

Apple today unveiled Apple Watch Ultra, which features a bold new design and a variety of features designed for endurance, exploration, and adventure. Apple Watch Ultra introduces a 49mm titanium case and a flat sapphire front crystal that reveals the largest and most vibrant Apple Watch display yet. The Action button can be customized to give the user instant access to a vast variety of features. Apple Watch Ultra has the best battery duration of any Apple Watch, reaching up to 36 hours during normal use.1 Additionally, a new low-power mode, perfect for multi-day adventures will extend the battery’s life to reach up to 60 hours.2 The Wayfinder watch face was specifically designed for the larger Apple Watch Ultra display and incorporates a compass into the dial, with space for up to eight different complications. Apple Watch Ultra also brings three new bands including Trail Loop, Alpine Loop, and Ocean Band — offering unique design features that provide a safe and comfy fit for every adventure.

Apple Watch Ultra is available to purchase today, with availability beginning Friday, September 23.

“Inspired by explorers and athletes from around the world, we created an entirely new category of Apple Watch designed for new and extreme environments — it’s the most rugged and capable Apple Watch yet,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. “Apple Watch Ultra is a versatile tool that empowers users to push their boundaries with adventure, endurance, and exploration.”

Bigger, Brighter, and Stronger

Made from aerospace-grade titanium, Apple Watch Ultra provides the perfect balance of weight, durability, and resistance to corrosion. The case is raised to completely surround the front crystal’s flat sapphire and protects the Retina display, which is as bright as 2000 nits -2x brighter than the best Apple Watch display yet. The new Action button in high-contrast international orange can be customized to give you immediate access to a range of features, including Workouts, Compass Waypoints, Backtrack and many more.

Apple Watch Ultra has three built-in microphones that significantly improve sound quality in voice calls during any conditions. An adaptive beamforming algorithm makes use of the microphones to record voice while reducing ambient background sounds which results in incredible clarity. In difficult windy environments, Apple Watch Ultra uses advanced wind noise-reduction algorithms, including machine learning, to deliver clear and clear audio for calls.

New Bands Designed for the Great Outdoors

It was specifically designed for runners and endurance athletes The Trail Loop specifically for runners and endurance athletes, the Trail Loopband is the thinnest Apple Watch band to date. The lightweight woven fabric is both soft and flexible that allows it to adjust to the perfect fit, and the convenient tab is designed to allow quick and easy adjustment.

With the idea of exploring in mind, with explorers in mind, the Alpine Loop band features two layers that are integrated and made of a continuous weaving process which eliminates the need to stitch. The upper loops, woven with high-strength yarn, provide adjustability and a secure attachment to the titanium G-hook fastener.

The Ocean Band is specifically designed for extreme water sports and recreational diving . It features a titanium buckle and corresponding spring-loaded loop. Molded from a flexible fluoroelastomermaterial, it stretches and makes use of the tubular shape to ensure an ideal fit. The Ocean Band also has an optional extra-long tail that allows users to comfortably wear over the wetsuit.

Endurance Sports and Elite Athletes

Apple Watch Ultra is an amazing tool for those looking to push themselves to the limit. The first time ever on the history of an Apple Watch, the precision dual-frequency GPS integrates L1 and the newest frequency, L5, plus new algorithms for positioning. Apple Watch Ultra delivers the most accurate GPS that any Apple Watch to date, offering users the most precise distance as well as pace and route information for training and competition.

Apple Watch Ultra is powered by watchOS 9, which includes new advanced running metrics to evaluate performance, such as Stride Length, Ground Contact Time and Vertical Oscillation and Running Power. New Workout Views, including Segments Splits, Segments, and Elevation, provide important metrics at just a glance, and because of the large display, Apple Watch Ultra is the only Apple Watch that can show six metrics at once. Users can take their workouts to the next step with features such as Heart Rate Zones, Custom Workouts, Pacer, and, coming later this year, Race Route. For duathlons, triathlons, or activities with any sequence of biking, swimming, or running, the new Multisport workout has autodetection so that you can effortlessly switch between exercises. Apple Watch Ultra has enough battery life to allow most users to complete a long-course triathlon, comprised of the 2.4-mile swim and a bike ride of 112 miles and a full marathon of 26.2 miles.

The Action button will instantly begin workouts and move users on to the next interval of a custom workout or to the next stage of the Multisport workout. It can also be used to identify the segments, in conjunction with the brand-new Track running experiencethat automatically gives the best pace and distance estimates for runners on a track.3

Explorers

With the bigger, brighter display and rugged design, Apple Watch Ultra is the perfect technical tool for adventurers and explorers in a variety of environments, from the every day to the extreme. The completely revamped Compass application in watchOS 9 offers more detailed information and three distinct views. The app features a brand new hybrid view that displays both an analog compass dial, as well as a digital view. By turning the Digital Crown reveals an additional view that displays latitude, longitude, elevation, and incline, aswell as an orienteering view showing Compass Waypoints as well as Backtrack.

Compass Waypoints are a simple and convenient method of marking a location or point of interest directly in the app. Pressing the Action button or tapping the Compass Waypoint icon drops a waypoint which can be edited by pressing the icon which appears. The Compass Waypoint complication changes continuously in real-time with direction of the point as well as its approximate distance.

Backtrack uses GPS data to create an outline of the location that the user has been in, which is helpful if they get lost or lost and need assistance finding their way back. It can also turn off at will in the background when off the grid. By pressing the Action button users can remove the Compass Waypoint or start or browse a Backtrack. A siren that is 86 decibels was specifically designed to be used in emergencies, should users get lost or injured and may help draw attention to an area. The unique sound signature incorporates two distinct patterns that alternate, that can be repeated for a period of time up to several hours. The first pattern suggests distress, while the second mimics the widely recognized SOS pattern. For backpacking trips lasting more than a day, battery lifespan can be extended by at least 60 hours with Low Power Mode plus an additional low-power setting that reduces frequency of GPS and heart rate readings.

The on-wrist operating temperature was designed to help explore the most remote and extreme locations including freezing cold mountains at 4deg F (-20deg C) to the blazing desert heat of 131 degrees F (55deg C).4 Apple Watch Ultra is certified to the relevant requirements of MIL-STD-810H, which is used for military equipment and popular among rugged equipment manufacturers. Testing includes low pressure (Altitude) Low Temperature, High Temperature, Temperature Shock, contamination by Fluids, Rain, Humidity as well as Immersion, Sand, Dust, Freeze/Thaw and Shock, Ice/Freezing Rain Vibration, and more. To make the most of evening conditions Turning the Digital Crown makes the interface more red to provide better visibility in the dark with the Wayfinder face.

Ocean and Water Sports Enthusiasts

Apple Watch Ultra is designed to support water sports, such as extreme activities like kitesurfing and wakeboarding, as well as recreational scuba diving that goes to 40 meters with the updated Oceanic+ app. To facilitate these underwater adventures, Apple Watch Ultra is certified to WR100. Apple Watch Ultra is also certified to EN 13319 which is a globally recognized standard for diving accessories, including depth gauges that are used by divers who enjoy recreational diving around the world.5

With a brand new depth gauge, Apple Watch Ultra features the Depth app, which is created with an easy-to-use user interface. With just a glance the Depth app shows time and depth, current temperature of the water, time of time underwater, as well as the maximum depth that can be reached. Users can program the Action button to immediately start the Depth app.

In collaboration together with Huish Outdoors, known for the development of innovative and reliable equipment for recreational diving, the new Oceanic+ app turns Apple Watch Ultra into a capable dive computer. Available on the App Store later this autumn, the app uses the Buhlmann decompression algorithm, and includes dive planning, easy-to-read dive metrics, visual and haptic alerts, no-decompression limits, ascent rate and safety stop guidance. Oceanic+ also offers a customized user profile with reports on local and current dive conditions, and an underwater logbook that can be shared with family and friends and automatically syncs to an iPhone.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Apple to combine our world-renowned expertise in scuba with the unique capability of Apple Watch Ultra to turn the same everyday watch into an innovative dive computer,” said Mike Huish, CEO of Huish Outdoors. “With Oceanic+, Apple Watch Ultra users can enjoy a new and enriched experience during scuba activities.”

Additional Features

Apple Watch Ultra includes all of the connectivity, activity, and health functions that made Apple Watch the best-selling smartwatch worldwide — from heart rate monitoring, and the ECG and Blood Oxygen apps, to Mindfulness and Activity rings, as well as additional health security, navigation, and features.

Apple Watch Ultra features innovative new capabilities for temperature sensing that provide additional insights into women’s health. The unique dual-sensor design minimizes the influence of external factors as well as the body itself. Utilizing the new capabilities, users can receive retrospective ovulation estimates, which can be helpful for family planning.6Temperature sensing also enables improved period predictions for users who menstruate.7 With iOS 16 and watchOS 9, Cycle Tracking users can now receive a notification if their logged cycle history shows a possible deviation, which can be a symptom of underlying health conditions.

Utilizing two motion sensors and an advanced algorithm for sensor-fusion, Apple Watch can detect a serious car crash with Crash Detection. When Apple Watch detects a severe car crash, the device will call the person who is in the crash and call emergency services if they are unresponsive after a 10-second countdown. Emergency responders will be notified of the location of the device which is shared with emergency contacts.

Apple Watch Ultra and the Environment

Apple Watch Ultra is designed to reduce environmental impact. It features recycled gold plating on multiple printed circuit boardswhich is a first for Apple Watch — as and 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 100 percent recycled tungsten in the Taptic Engine. Display glass is free of arsenic, and Apple Watch Ultra is mercury-, BFR-, PVC-, and beryllium-free. No Apple Watch packaging uses outer plastic wrap and the majority of all packaging is made of fiber and brings Apple closer to its aim of completely eliminating plastic packaging by 2025.

Today, Apple is carbon neutral for global corporate operations, and by the year 2030, plans to be carbon-free across all manufacturing supply chains and all life-cycles of products. This means that every Apple device sold, from component manufacturing assembly, transport customers’ use, charging, and all the way to recycling and material recovery will have a net-zero impact on the climate.

Privacy

Privacy is fundamental in the creation and evolution process across all Apple’s features. When an iPhone user’s iPhone is locked with a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID, all of their health and fitness information within the Health app — including medical ID — is secured. Any Health data backed up to iCloud is encrypted both in transit and stored on Apple servers. In the case of iOS as well as watchOS with the default two-factor authentication and a passcode, Health app data synced to iCloud is protected from end to end, meaning that Apple does not have the key to decrypt the data and cannot read it.
