Middlesex County’s COVID-19 cases increased by 16,783 this week

In the week that ended Sunday, Massachusetts new coronavirus cases emerged, rising 70% when 85,095 cases were reported. In the previous week there were 50,049 new cases of the virus that is causing COVID-19.

Massachusetts ranks seventh in the nation for where the coronavirus spreads fastest per person, according to a USA TODAY Network analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University.

Last week, COVID-19 cases in the United States rose 104% from the previous week, with 2,833,203 cases reported. With 2.07% of the country’s population, Massachusetts had 3% of the country’s new cases last week. Forty-nine states had more cases in the past week than the week before.

Christmas and New Years Eve significantly disrupted who was tested, how many people were tested, what laboratories were running, and what government agencies reported in a timely manner. Some Christmas weekend reports have been postponed to the last week. Most states reported no cases at all over the New Year’s weekend, which will bring those reports into the following week. As a result, week-to-week comparisons will be skewed and these numbers will be unreliable even if they correspond to state data.

Middlesex County reported 16,783 cases and 35 deaths last week, up from 9,829 cases and 37 deaths. 213,486 cases and 4,129 deaths were reported throughout the pandemic.

Worcester County reported 8,254 cases and 35 deaths last week, up from 5,141 cases and 33 deaths. 128,771 cases and 2,578 deaths were reported throughout the pandemic.

Norfolk County reported 7,834 cases and 15 deaths last week, up from 4,108 cases and 16 deaths. 86,849 cases and 1,954 deaths were reported throughout the pandemic.

Within Massachusetts, the worst weekly outbreaks per person were in Hampden County, with 1,570 cases per 100,000 per week; Suffolk County at 1,502; and Essex County at 1,416. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say high community transmission rates start at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Most of the total new cases were Middlesex County with 16,783; Suffolk County at 12,077; and Essex County at 11,175. The weekly number of cases has increased in 12 districts compared to the previous week. The largest increases from the previous week’s pace were in Middlesex, Suffolk and Essex counties.
