Cyber ​​security incident suspends MSMC Winter Session

In recent years, college students in particular, along with K-12 students, have learned to adapt to ever-changing classroom structures. In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and the academic years that followed, students became accustomed to terminologies such as hybrid courses, virtual classrooms, seated or online.

With this in mind, there has been a strong focus on cybersecurity and security in recent years.

A recent cybersecurity situation at a Hudson Valley college has left students unable to attend the originally scheduled Winter Session courses, also known as Intersession.

With the exception of one course detailed below, all winter intersession courses at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh have been postponed indefinitely.

Classes are canceled — a statement most college students love to hear every now and then, but classes being postponed indefinitely is another story.

Upon entering the website, it is explained that the college has discovered a cybersecurity incident that has impacted the “network environment”. They further state that the college is working with a team of “forensic experts to fully understand the magnitude and impact of this incident and restore operations to a secure and sanitized network environment.”

As a result of this cybersecurity incident, all winter intersession classes have been postponed indefinitely. The only exception is ONLY-5215a mental health course that is still being offered.

Intersessional classes are held in the period between the fall and spring academic semesters.

At this point in time, all courses offered in spring 2023 are to be carried out as planned.

Which systems have been affected by the cybersecurity situation at MSMC?

According to the information on the Weather, cancellations and notifications Section of the Mount Saint Mary College website, all systems using their central authentication server are currently inaccessible. This includes staff email, student and faculty email, student portal, eClass, Google Drive, student servers and workstations, card access to campus buildings, Internet access from campus, network printers, and library databases.

Mount Saint Mary said once the systems are restored and operational they will notify the campus community via their websitesocial media channels and through their MSMC alert system.
