CNY at the Olympic Games: Katie Zaferes becomes the first female athlete from Syracuse to win 2 medals in almost 100 years

Syracuse, NY – Katie Zaferes, a former Syracuse University runner, won her second medal in the Tokyo Olympics on Friday night when she helped the United States achieve a silver medal in its mixed triathlon relay.

Zaferes, who previously won a bronze medal in the women’s individual triathlon at these games, teamed up with Kevin McDowell, Taylor Knibb and Morgan Pearson in the US relay.

Great Britain won the event, followed by the United States, while France took bronze.

Zaferes, who graduated from Syracuse University in 2012, is the first SU alum to win multiple medals at the same Olympics since the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics.

The list of multiple medal winners from SU includes: Meyer Prinstein (2x; 1900 Paris triple jump / long jump, 1904 St. Louis – triple jump / long jump), Charlie Reidpath (1912 Stockholm – 400m / 4×400 meter relay), Chet Bowman (1924 Paris 100m / 4×400-meter relay) and Ray Barbuti (1928 Amsterdam – 4×100 / 4×400-meter relay).

Zaferes ran both cross-country and athletics in Syracuse and left school with records in the 5,000 meter hall and in the obstacle course, where she was second team All-American in 2011.

Her bronze in the individual triathlon made her only the third American to ever receive a medal at this event.

Zaferes ‘two medals and Jenna Caira’s bronze with Canadian softball bring the SU alums’ medal count to three, which equates to the 2008 Olympics for most medals in a single game. Syracuse also had Hattie Taylor ranked fourth for Great Britain in rowing, with Jerami Grant (US men’s basketball), Kayla Alexander (Canada women’s basketball) and Justyn Knight (Canada athletics) competing or competing.

Upcoming schedule:

Former SU men’s basketball player Jerami Grant and the rest of the US men’s basketball team will try to secure a place in the medal round in the game against the Czech Republic. The game started at 8am on Saturday morning on Peacock; NBC’s streaming service.

Former Syracuse women’s basketball star Kayla Alexander and Team Canada will play their third game against Spain on Saturday night at 9 p.m. The game can be streamed live on NBCOlympics.com.
