Stefon Diggs overshadows the story

Bill’s WR Stefon Diggs recorded five receptions for 96 receiving yards in the first quarter. Last player with 100 receiving yards in the first quarter of a playoff game? Antonio Brown six years ago against the Miami Dolphins.

Dolphins drop passports all the time

Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill have each dropped passes in this opening quarter. It will be difficult for the Dolphins to win with Skylar Thompson in QB at this rate.

The Dolphins finished the regular season with the eighth most drops in the NFL (29).

Bills count quickly

Two touchdowns in 2:50? That will work. After a Dean Marlowe interception gave the Bills offense a short field to work with, Buffalo were back in business and capped another hit with a 12-yard touchdown run from James Cook. The Bills are rolling now and lead 14-0 in the first.

Bills turn interceptions into points

Bills converted Skylar Thompson’s interception into points and now lead 14-0 after James Cook’s 12-yard rushing score.

The Dolphins have conceded 87 points fewer in turnover this season, the fourth most in the NFL and the most among the remaining playoff teams.

Bills’ Dean Marlowe likes to catch the dolphins

Bills safety Dean Marlowe, replacing Damar Hamlin in the lineup, knocks out Skylar Thompson.

It’s Marlowe’s first interception since Week 16 of 2020 against… the Dolphins.

In fact, all three of Marlowe’s career interceptions have now come against Miami.

How do you even defend such a ball placement?

The Bills strike first, in true Bills fashion. Miami flashed in third and 15th place, so Josh Allen launched a moonball to Stefon Diggs for a 52 win. That led to Miami’s first-and-goal 6. The very next game, Allen rolled to the right and found TE Dawson Knox for landing. Incredible throw from Allen, impressive catch from Knox – his fifth touchdown in his last five games. How do you even defend such a ball placement? Simply absurd.

Bills jump out to lead early

Bills jumps out for an early 7-0 lead after a 6-yard pass from Josh Allen to Dawson Knox. A 52-yard completion by Allen to Stefon Diggs in the previous game set it up.

Allen now has five 50-yard completions this season (T-third in the NFL) and three of those went to Diggs.

Buffalo’s story early

The Bills got off to a quick start last week thanks to Nyheim Hines’ kickoff return touchdown to open the game, but the Buffalo offense has been slow of late.

The Bills have scored twice in their last 11 games (FG or TD) on their first offensive drive of the game. During that span, Buffalo ranked 30th in the NFL with .82 points per drive on his first possession.

Pouncy: What I see in the Dolphins-Bills matchup

We have an AFC East playoff matchup this afternoon while the Dolphins travel to Buffalo to take on the Bills. Those two teams split in the regular season and both competitions were close — the Dolphins won by two in September while the Bills won by three in December — but it’s hard to imagine a similar result on Sunday.

The Dolphins are again without QB Tua Tagovailoa. Instead, seventh-round rookie Skylar Thompson will be tasked with defeating Josh Allen and that Buffalo defense. Not ideal. Miami has two explosive receivers in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, who have caused problems for secondaries across the NFL this season, but you have to wonder if the Dolphins will try to limit potential mistakes from Thompson and focus on Jeff Wilson and leaving the ground game a bit more.

Defensively, Miami has the third-highest flash rate in the NFL, according to TruMedia, so look to defensive coordinator Josh Boyer to try and throw Allen out of his game with different looks. That’s probably Miami’s best shot at keeping that close given their situation.

New head coaches in the postseason

The Dolphins are one of five playoff teams with head coaches hired before this season: Miami (Mike McDaniel), Jaguars (Doug Pederson), Vikings (Kevin O’Connell), Giants (Brian Daboll), and Buccaneers (Todd Bowles). That’s the most playoff teams of its kind in a single season in NFL history.

  • The last head coach in his first season with a Super Bowl-winning team was Gary Kubiak with the Broncos in 2015 when they won Super Bowl 50 (Kubiak had previously coached the Texans).
  • The last rookie head coach to win a Super Bowl was George Seifert with the 49ers in 1989.
  • The last rookie head coach to reach the Super Bowl was Jim Caldwell with the Colts in 2009.
