Three children have died after a fire Saturday morning in Buffalo, New York that also hospitalized three other children, including a baby, and their grandmother.

The fire was at the 200 block of Darmouth Ave. reported around 7:30 a.m., Buffalo Fire Commissioner William Renaldo said during a news conference Saturday.

According to Renaldo, three girls aged 7, 8 and 10 died as a result of the fire.

Two other children, a girl and a boy, have been taken to Children’s Hospital and are currently in critical condition, he said. A seven-month-old girl was also taken to the same hospital and is currently in stable condition.

A 63-year-old grandmother was taken to Erie County Medical Center and is currently in critical condition.

The children were raised by their grandparents. According to Renaldo, the grandfather was not home at the time of the fire.

“It was a very challenging year in the fire service. There have been a number of deaths. A series of top-class brandies. Obviously we had the mass shooting at Topps on May 14 and we’re also coming from the challenge of a global pandemic,” Renaldo said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated. No firefighters were injured in the incident.

Buffalo is still recovering from a deadly and historic snowstorm that swept through last weekend, burying the city in nearly 52 inches of snow and killing at least 39 people. Most of the victims were found dead either outside or in their homes, while others died in their cars as a result of delayed emergency services, snow removal or cardiac arrest, officials said.
