NEW YORK (WWTI) – Three more cases of COVID-19 Omicron variants were confirmed in New York state on Saturday, bringing the total to eight in the state.

All three new cases come from New York City, according to a news release from the governor’s office. These additional area cases brought the total population of New York City to seven with the variant, of which one remaining case is from Suffolk County.
So far, the cases seem unrelated and have been confirmed by sequencing the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Three of the Omicron cases were identified on Mount Sinai, three cases were identified in the Pandemic Response Lab, one case was confirmed by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and the Suffolk County case was identified by PRL on Dec. 2.
The Ministry of Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett, encouraged New Yorkers to take the necessary precautions to combat the further spread of the COVID-19 variant of Omicron.
“The Omicron variant is here and, as expected, we see the beginning of the community expansion. We continue to work closely with our partners at the national, state and local levels, ”said Bassett. “Right now, we don’t know how quickly Omicron will spread or how severe Omicron’s symptoms will be. What we are seeing is that the surge in cases across New York state continues to be due to the Delta variant. We encourage all New Yorkers to use the best prevention tools we have: get vaccinated, get a booster, and wear a mask. “
