Wedding album found in New York airport associated with Oahu Church

MANOA, Hawaii (KHON2) – A decades-old wedding album found in a New York airport has been tied to a church on Oahu.

Albany International Airport learned which church the photos were taken in, but the community is still searching for the rightful owner.

The album could be 40 to 50 years old or even older. A former parishioner of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Manoa recognized the reredos after Albany International Airport announced they had found it Book with Aloha embroidery.

The reredos – the ornamental screen on the wall behind the altar – in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church is a hand-carved work of art made of koa wood found nowhere else in the world.

“I couldn’t believe it, it was quite a coincidence. And I think the people in the church felt the same way when we saw that, ‘Wait, there’s a picture of the inside of our church!’”

Karl Bachman, Music Director of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church

Airport officials said they’ve had the album in their lost-and-found office for a number of years and want to find its rightful home.

“You do a wedding album, you don’t do four or five. So it’s important that we give things like this back to these people,” said Doug Myers, public affairs director for Albany International Airport.

While the retable is clear enough to be identified, both airport and church officials are hoping someone will recognize the faces on the album as well.

“People look at it and think the picture could be from 1968 to 1978,” Bachman said. “But we want to bring the images to the community.”

“Maybe one of them will see it and say, ‘Oh, that’s like this!’ And then help us identify it,” he said.

“Imagine if you were that couple and you lost your wedding album. If that couple is still around and still a couple, maybe they’d really like to keep this album.”

The album will remain in New York — airport officials asked anyone who recognizes the couple to call (518)-242-2230.

Weddings are recorded at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, but they have to match faces to names to find out who to return the album to. They said the more eyes the better.

“We just need help. And as more people see it, hopefully someone will eventually recognize someone in it,” Myers said.
