Vinette Towers resident reports hearing explosion. Syracuse fire, police respond to 12-story building

Syracuse, NY — A resident of Vinette Towers said she heard an explosion Saturday night inside her 12-story apartment building on the city’s North Side.

The Syracuse Fire Department and Syracuse police were called at about 9:30 pm to the senior-living apartments, at 947 Pond St., according to Onondaga County 911 Center dispatches.

A 911 caller reported heavy smoke on the sixth floor of the multi-unit building, Syracuse police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Blake said Saturday night. Police believe the fire began at Apartment 608, Blake said.

Initial 911 dispatch reports indicated fireworks may have been involved in starting the fire.

A resident, who lives on the third floor of the building, said she was forced to evacuate her apartment and her floor was flooded with water.

Multiple American Medical Response (AMR) ambulances were called to the scene, according to dispatches.

At least two people taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for treatment, Blake said. At least two other people were treated by paramedics at the scene and released, he said.

The American Red Cross and National Grid also responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the fire department, Blake said.

A Syracuse Fire Department official was not immediately available to comment on the fire or the investigation.
