NFL player Damar Hamlin is showing “signs of improvement” but remains in intensive care after suffering cardiac arrest, his team said in an update Wednesday night.

The Buffalo Bills player remains in critical condition in hospital after collapsing after being tackled against Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tee Higgins on Monday night.

Hamlin’s uncle Dorrian Glenn had told CNN on Tuesday night that his nephew had to be resuscitated twice, although family friend and Hamlin’s marketing rep Jordon Rooney clarified those remarks on Wednesday morning – saying Glenn had expressed himself wrongly and that safety had only been resuscitated once been.

“Things are moving in a positive direction right now,” Rooney told NFL Network. “What the doctors wanted to see, I think they saw. There were some reports last night that he was resuscitated twice. I wanted to make it clear we made a mistake, he was only revived once.”

Hamlin’s family have thanked the fans and praised the work of the medical staff, the support from the Bengals and coach Zac Taylor. “We are deeply moved by the prayers, kind words and donations from fans across the country,” it said in a statement Tuesday.

NY Jets star Sauce Gardner wears the Damar Hamlin jersey during the warm up

A nice moment of support between division rivals as New York Jets superstar rookie cornerback Sauce Gardner tweeted that he will wear a Damar Hamlin jersey during warm-up ahead of Sunday’s season finale against the Miami Dolphins.

The Jets and Hamlin’s Bills both compete in the AFC East (as does the Dolphins) but Gardner bought a Hamlin jersey from NFL merchandise site Fanatics and while it won’t arrive in time for Sunday, Michael Rubin replied, Fanatics co-chaired the tweet to say he will be sending a jersey to the Jets facility.

The widow of the only NFL player to die on the field felt “very emotional” after Damar Hamlin’s meltdown.

The widow of the only NFL player to die on the field in the history of the sport became “very emotional” watching Monday’s collapse of Damar Hamlin, she said.

Chuck Hughes was a wide receiver for the Detroit Lions in October 1971 when he was clutching his chest and fell to the ground, suffering a fatal heart attack near the end of the team’s game against the Chicago Bears. His widow Sharon rode with him in the back of the ambulance before he was pronounced dead.

A little over 51 years later, she felt it all come back as she watched the Buffalo Bills, who escorted Hamlin to safety, get up from a tackle, take a few steps and then onto the field during Monday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals collapsed.

“Can you imagine how his mother felt?” Ms Hughes told NBC News. “It’s an awful feeling and, well, I felt so sorry for the whole family last night.”

Dan Campbell says Detroit Lions have come together to pray for Hamlin

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell said his team came together to pray for Damar Hamlin as they came together as a team for the first time since the injury.

“We started the meeting with a prayer,” Campbell told reporters. “We said a prayer, we all got together in the room, we did that and then we moved on.

“We thought that was the best and the right thing to do. If you have no words and do not know what to say, there are waves of emotions, then prayer is best. So we did that and left it at that.”

“I knew he could hear me,” says a childhood friend of the Hamelin hospital visit

Damar Hamlin’s childhood friend and high school teammate Indianapolis Colts safetyman Rodney Thomas II visited the Buffalo Bills star in the hospital and has no doubt he will make a recovery.

Thomas went to the hospital where Hamlin was being treated Monday night, where he said Hamlin was sedated after being forced off the field during the Bills’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

“I know he could hear me,” Thomas said while speaking to reporters on Wednesday. He said he could be in the room with Hamlin and hold his hand. “Even if he couldn’t hear me, it didn’t matter. I said what I had to say.”

The couple, who became close friends as teammates at his Pittsburgh high school, spoke daily and had spoken Monday before Hamlin’s breakdown.

“It put my mind at ease,” Thomas said of seeing his friend again. “It made the journey home much easier. I could go home knowing he’ll be straight. I have him. We all have him. Everyone is behind him.”

What is commotion cordis? Traumatic injury that may have led to Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest

The team said in a statement that the 24-year-old suffered cardiac arrest on Monday night. Mr Hamlin received CPR on the field before being taken to hospital.

“When he was hit in the front of the chest, as hard as he was, it’s a phenomenon known as commotio cordis. This is when you get a traumatic anterior chest injury just as the heart is preparing for another beat,” said Dr. Anthony Cardillo to CNN.

“During this repolarization phase and the heart’s electromechanical activity…the heart is powered by electrical impulses,” noted Dr. Cardillo. “If you have trauma at the exact moment when that heart is preparing to repolarize and beat again, you’re going to go into cardiac arrest.”

Hamlin’s injury wasn’t Tee Higgins’ fault, the players say

NFL players and teammates have put their weight behind Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins, saying he did nothing wrong during the game that contributed to Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest.

During Monday night’s game, Higgins led with his right shoulder, which hit the defensive back in the chest. Hamlin then wrapped his arms around Higgins’ shoulders and helmet to pull him down. The game appeared to be routine, but Hamlin got up and then collapsed backwards.

“There’s nothing you can do about that hit,” quarterback Joe Burrow said Wednesday after the Bengals trained for the first time since the incident. This hit happens on every turn of every single game. That’s what’s scary about it.”

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons pushed back former NFL player Bart Scott, who suggested on ESPN that Higgins was partly to blame for putting his head down and “thrown his body” into Hamlin’s chest after hitting a caught a 13-yard pass.

“(A) are we serious?!!? Why are we letting some people speak on TV?!” Parsons tweeted in response to Scott’s comments. “That was a freak incident, but blaming another player is wild!”

Bengals receiver Tyler Boyd was more direct, tweeting “straight bozo” in response to Scott.

Bengals defensive tackle DJ Reader said Hamlin and Higgins were just “out there playing at full speed”.

“That kind of thing happens sometimes, and it’s just such a crazy accident,” Reader said. “You can’t take your foot off the gas out there as a defender or offensive player. If you play lightly, you run the risk of getting injured. It’s the only way to play this game. You have to play 100 miles an hour and that’s how you go about it.”
