Syracuse hires Nunzio Campanile, former Rutgers assistant, to coach tight ends

SYRACUSE, NY – Syracuse Football has officially added Nunzio Campanile to their team as their tight ends coach.

The move was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel earlier this week. Campanile will take over the coaching position from ex-SU offensive coordinator Robert Anae and lead a group that also includes Oronde Gadsden II, first-team All-ACC selection.

Campanile has been an assistant at Rutgers since 2018. He first served as running backs coach under Chris Ash and then moved to tight ends under Greg Schiano.

On January 10, Campanile announced that he would not be returning to the Scarlet Knights staff. He had served as interim offensive coordinator until ex-Minnesota OC Kirk Ciarrocca was brought to the position.

The Campanile family is one of the most prominent football families in New Jersey, an area where Syracuse has had a heavy recruiting focus in recent years. Campanile was head coach at Bergen Catholic, a state powerhouse, before joining the college ranks.

His younger brother Vito is now the head coach of the school that has produced two of SU’s most exciting transfers – cornerbacks Jayden Bellamy and Jaeden Gould.

Campanile’s connections to the region will come in handy following the departure of safety coach Nick Monroe, who was known for his heavy recruiting presence in New Jersey. Monroe relocated to Minnesota on January 12 to fill a role as assistant defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach.

“(Campanile’s) connection to the region as a strong recruiter and his ability to develop young talent is welcomed here in Syracuse,” said Orange head coach Dino Babers in a press release.

Syracuse had to hire three new assistants this offseason: Campanile, defensive coordinator Rocky Long, and offense coach Steve Farmer. The Orange is also reportedly hiring former Nebraska assistant Travis Fisher to coach the defenders.
