Report: Cincinnati Bengals said play will resume in ten minutes after the Damar Hamlin incident

CINCINNATI — Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported Saturday that the Bengals were actually told to warm up again for the Bills game after Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest on Monday night.

Despite all that, NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent twice denied knowledge of such a plan to resume during media briefings.

Vincent said the game’s sequel lacked “both empathy and compassion” for the Bills’ safety.

“So what actually happened?” Flori wrote. “According to multiple sources, who asked not to be identified given the delicate situation, Bengals players were informed by a member of the officiating crew that the game against the Bills would be resumed in 10 minutes. As a source explained, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow began throwing on the touchline after the Bengals noticed Bill’s receiver Stefon Diggs was trying to adequately motivate his teammates to continue the game.”

Cincinnati wasn’t exactly in great headspace to play right away, but they didn’t expect the game to be canceled entirely.

“The Bengals were willing to accommodate the Bills,” revealed Florio. “A player overheard Bengals coach Zac Taylor offering to restart play on Tuesday. Bengals players generally accepted the prospect of a one-day delay. But then the Bills left Cincinnati. Several Bengals players were confused by this development. On the one hand they were sensitive to the situation surrounding Damar Hamlin. On the other hand, they knew what the game was about. They wanted to play it.”

All in all, it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of saving Hamlin’s life, but it’s puzzling why there are competing teams on such a black-and-white request: Has anyone told these teams they’re looking forward to the rest of the… should prepare? ?

We’ll likely never know for sure as Cincinnati faces the prospect of a home-court coin toss and a loss on Sunday.
