PETA protests Starbucks’ milk fee with free lattes outside Elmwood store

BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) — PETA says the organization isn’t happy that Starbucks is charging more for vegan milk than cow’s milk. In response, they say they plan to “hijack Buffalo Starbucks customers” this Sunday.

Specifically, this means PETA supporters will be outside the Elmwood Cafe starting around 8:15 a.m. handing out free vegan lattes, which they say are made with oat milk.

According to PETA, more than 142,000 supporters have urged Starbucks to make changes.

“Starbucks is counting its beans when it should be counting the number of customers it will lose if it doesn’t end the premium on vegan milk,” said Tracy Reiman, PETA’s executive vice president. “People who choose to consume responsibly for the sake of animals, their own health, or because they know dairy is fueling climate change are angry at the company for putting profit over ethics.”

According to the organizing group Starbucks Workers United, this Starbucks was the first in the country to unionize, and hundreds of others locally and across the US followed suit.

PETA says it has hosted vegan coffee giveaways at other Starbucks stores across the country in the past, including in Ohio, Colorado and Nebraska.
