New York State In-depth

Katelyn McCarthy | WSTM

Katelyn McCarthy joined the CNYCentral team in September 2022 as a multimedia journalist.

Katelyn is originally from Orange County, New York. After high school, she decided to stay local and received her associate degree from SUNY Orange. She then continued her education at Marist College, where she received her bachelor’s degree. Most recently, Katelyn received her master’s degree from Syracuse University’s SI Newhouse School of Public Communications in Broadcast and Digital Journalism with a concentration in Sports.

While in Syracuse, Katelyn was a beatwriter for Syracuse Football at Sports Illustrated, became WAER FM Radio’s first female sportscaster, and was a part-time reporter for the Syracuse Stallions.

Before returning to Syracuse, Katelyn did an internship at FOX 46 in Charlotte, NC, where she covered training camp for the Carolina Panthers.

Growing up, Katelyn spent her Sundays watching the NFL with her family. Pam Oliver was the first woman Katelyn remembers on NFL Sundays, and that’s when she knew she wanted to pursue a career in television.

When she’s not working you can find her taking a Zumba class, trying out new restaurants in CNY or cheering for the Baltimore Ravens, the New York Yankees and of course the Syracuse Orange.

Katelyn loves storytelling and is very excited to start her career in a place she calls home!
