Increase in thefts of Kia and Hyundai cars in Syracuse

SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) — Peggy Voll parked her car earlier in the driveway of her home on Syracuse’s Northside. That changed last August.

“I would get up in the morning just doing chores or whatever, and I tend to look out the window and when I did I was like, ‘Oh crap, my car is gone,'” recalled Fully.

She was sure her 2021 Kia Sportage had been stolen, so she called the police. She didn’t know about it at the time, but there is a TikTok challenge on how to steal Kia vehicles.

“It shows how you rip out the dashboard and then, like the cable you use to charge your phone, they use that to start your car,” Voll said.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is providing steering wheel locks to Hyundai owners following recent thefts

A few days later, the police found her car. It has it now but has had to have a number of repairs done.

“When I saw the car none of that was here, everything was gone up to here just wires hanging, very annoying,” Voll described as she showed the inside of her car by the steering wheel.

Even with insurance, she said she had to spend at least $2,000 out of her own pocket to cover the cost of a rent and other expenses, and it had affected her day-to-day life.

“I’m disabled, it’s very difficult for me to move around and now I can’t use my scooters because the elevator is broken.”

The Syracuse Police Department recommends purchasing a steering wheel lock. Voll’s advice is if you have one, park your car in the garage.
