Many people from Kings Park and the surrounding boroughs on Thursday expressed concern about plans to build a new railway line.

A meeting was held at the Commack Library where residents discussed environmental and transportation issues when it comes to the area.

The company leading the project says the rail service will transport cremation ash away from Long Island.

Long Island’s last public landfill in Brookhaven is scheduled to close in 2024.

The plan is to operate one train per day, five days a week.

The project involves federal, state, and local officials, and in order to build, the city would need to change its current zoning codes.

Leslie Fried has lived a block away from the planned site for the railroad for 30 years.

He says smells and pollution destroy the quality of life there.

However, other neighbors are concerned about the noise as the train will be running in the middle of the night.

Suffolk leg. Rob Trotta supports the plan and believes it will make things better for the community.

“After the analysis, I really think it’s going to be quieter, there will be fewer trucks in the neighborhood, fewer trucks on the street, gas will be saved and it will be better for the community,” says Trotta.

The city has yet to change zoning codes, so officials say the project won’t begin construction for four years.
