Heat advisory continues for Central NY as temperatures, humidity keep rising

Syracuse, NY — The National Weather Service issued heat advisories Saturday for parts of Central New York and other regions as high temperatures and humidity are expected to climb during the day.

The advisory will be in place from 11 am to 6 pm for parts of Central New York and the Southern Tier, including Onondaga, Cayuga and Broome counties.

The air could feel as hot as 97 degrees due to the combination of the rising heat and humidity.

That heat could linger into Sunday, depending on when expected thunderstorms hit, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are forecast to reach a high of nearly 95 degrees Saturday in Syracuse, falling short of the July 23 record of 98 set in 1933.

Central New York is in the midst of a six-day stretch of 90-degree days according to forecasts, something so rare it happens less than once a decade.

Friday was the fourth consecutive day of 90 or greater. Syracuse has had six consecutive days of 90 degrees just 10 times since official National Weather Service records began in 1902.

With the forecast temperature on Saturday, the National Weather Service said there is a greater risk of heat-related illness. Libraries, community centers and other locations in the state have been designated as cooling centers for the public.

The New York Department of Health lists those centers on its website. Just type in your address to find centers near you.
