Canada is easing re-entry restrictions, as are fears about a new variant

Starting today, the Canadian government will make it easier – and cheaper – for its residents to take short trips to the United States.

Canadians can cross the border and return home within 72 hours without showing a recent negative Covid-19 test.

But with the potentially deadly Omicron variant looming, it’s not clear how long this rule change will take.

Business owners, nonprofits and elected officials in Buffalo Niagara applaud the surge in tourism they anticipate with the removal of costly and onerous testing requirements.

That change in policy comes just hours after Ontario officials announced the discovery of Omicron in the province on Sunday.

While we don’t know how dangerous this variant is or how effective Covid-19 vaccines are in preventing its spread, its arrival in North America increases the chance that Canada could take action again to tighten the border.
