Gas stoves could be banned in New York state

Plastic bags and now gas ovens? Who Had the Gas Stove Ban on Their 2022 Bingo Boards?

Do you have a gas or electric stove in your household? Believe it or not, most homes have an electric range. Almost every apartment I’ve ever rented had an electric stove. Just because gas range appliances are in the minority doesn’t mean there aren’t many of them. According to Gizmodo, about 40 million homes in America have a gas stove in their kitchen. That is about 35% of households.

Anyone who owns a gas stove knows some dangers. I live in a large apartment complex and at least once a week someone from the maintenance team has to come by with a detector because another resident may have left their stove on. This could be disastrous and fatal if an open flame is nearby. Leaving the gas on can also cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

Could gas stoves soon be a thing of the past?

According to Bloomberg, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission plans to address the many health, safety and environmental concerns posed by gas appliances. Bloomberg also reported that the EPA and WHO have been able to link gas stove pollutants to heart problems, respiratory diseases and even cancer. They even think gas stoves could be linked to several cases of asthma in children.

Lawmakers across the country may be considering banning natural gas hookups in new homes. Several cities across America already have these bans in place. We might even see this in New York State as there is already one in New York City.

Some energy companies believe this would push up electricity prices.
