Dump truck driver dies after rollover on I-81 in Syracuse

Syracuse, NY – The driver of a dump truck who crashed and rolled over Interstate 81 today has died, Syracuse police said.

Wally Hicks, 66, of Pennsylvania, was partially thrown out of the vehicle when it collided on I-81 near the Butternut Street flyover. He was taken to Upstate University Hospital by ambulance, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

Hicks was hauling asphalt that was spilled on the highway. The police do not provide any further information about the accident. The accident, which happened around 12:13 p.m. today, is still under investigation, Det. Said George Hack.

The I-81 was opened to traffic again, the police said at around 4:40 p.m.
