Buffalo Police Department offers tips on preventing your vehicle from being stolen

BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) – Buffalo Police Department announced that they have launched their annual car theft prevention effort.

The department’s staff hand out brochures with tips on how to prevent your vehicle from being stolen.

Police say most car thefts in the city are vehicles that were stolen while left unattended or the owner left the keys in the vehicle. While it is a violation of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law to leave a vehicle unattended while driving, police said their priority is prevention by educating the public about the law and the risk.

It may seem harmless to leave your car unattended while walking to the store or gas station, but it only takes seconds to steal your car. Don’t make it easier for someone to drive off with your already running and unattended car. Turn off your car, lock it and take the keys.

– BPD Deputy Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia

  • Hide car keys at home as many stolen vehicles are taken away by friends and family
