Buffalo Bills vs. New England Patriots preview: “Tears of joy” as Buffalo replaces Damar Hamlin

In their regular-season finale, the Buffalo Bills host the New England Patriots in an AFC East duel at Highmark Stadium on Sunday.

The Bills and the entire NFL continue to extend their support and best wishes to Bill’s safety Damar Hamlin. Hamlin, 24, collapsed on the field in the first quarter of Monday’s game and received medical attention after it was later revealed he had suffered cardiac arrest.

The Bills on Thursday announced positive news from Hamlin’s doctors about his recovery, saying Hamlin had shown “remarkable improvement” and while still seriously ill “showed he appears to be neurologically intact.” Given the shocking injury, Sunday’s game in Buffalo will no doubt be getting emotional as football has taken a backseat across the league.

Hamlin’s health remains the top priority. It’s safe to say that the news of Hamlin’s health improvements has quarterback Josh Allen, coach Sean McDermott and the rest of the team poised to take the field.

“We want to go out and play at 3,” Allen said. “Of course we will play with less heavy hearts now. Today’s news brought many tears of joy, I can tell you that.”

The Monday Night Football Matchup will be a battle between one of the Bills’ best offenses and one of the Patriots’ worst.

Bills MVP candidate Allen has the sixth most passing yards (4,029) and second most total touchdowns (39). Buffalo also had local success in their recent win over the Chicago Bears, rushing for a season-high 254 yards thanks to running back Devin Singletary and rookie James Cook.

New England needs the win to reach the postseason, while Buffalo’s road to the playoffs is more complicated.

“Obviously it was hard just because I had something to do with the play (and) whatnot,” Higgins said, per Mitch Stacy of the Associated Press. “But everyone made me feel whole again. I’ve spoken to his mom and everything is fine, he’s fine so I’m in a good place right now.
