BOSTON (AP) – Charlie Coyle had the only goal in the shootout and the Boston Bruins defeated Florida 3-2 on Saturday evening and ended the Panthers’ winning streak at the start of the season after eight games.

The Panthers fell two wins short of the NHL record for consecutive wins to begin a season set up by Toronto in 1993-94 and matched by Buffalo in 2006-07.

It was Florida’s second game since coach Joel Quenneville resigned due to a sex scandal when he was with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010.

Quenneville, the second-winning coach in NHL history, resigned Thursday, two days after being among those involved in failing to respond quickly to former Chicago player Kyle Beach allegations during the Stanley Cup Playoffs 2010 being sexually abused by then Blackhawks assistant Brad Aldrich.

The interim trainer is Andrew Brunette, an assistant to Quenneville.

Coyle also usually scored and Linus Ullmark stopped 33 shots and three attempts on penalties.

Coyle rounded goalkeeper Spencer Knight before sinking a shot on penalties.

Aleksander Barkov put Florida ahead with a power play goal 7:49 in the third half, but Charlie McAvoy shot in a wrist shot from the lower right circle for a power play result, usually leveling it 6:25 left.
