Bishop Matthew Clark dies

The late Congresswoman Louise Slaughter welcomes retired Bishop Matthew Clark of Rochester to Washington in 2015.

The former leader of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, Bishop Emeritus Matthew Clark, has died. Bishop Salvatore Matano announced on Sunday morning:

“I regret to inform you that His Excellency the Most Venerable Matthew H. Clark, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Rochester, died this morning, January 22, 2023, in his room at the Sisters of Saint Joseph Motherhouse after a period of waning Health. Bishop Clark was 85 years old. Funeral arrangements for Bishop Clark are pending.

“Bishop Clark was born on July 15, 1937 and ordained a priest in Rome on December 19, 1962 by Archbishop Martin John O’Connor for the Diocese of Albany, New York. Bishop Clark was ordained bishop by Pope John Paul II on May 27, 1979 and subsequently installed as the eighth Bishop of Rochester on June 26, 1979, where he served for over 33 years until his resignation was accepted on September 21, 2012. in accordance with Canon 401 §1 of the Code of Canon Law.

“United as a diocesan family, we now accompany Bishop Clark with our prayers, especially at Holy Mass, asking the angels and saints to receive his soul and present him to the Eternal High Priest, our Savior Jesus Christ. Please also pray for Bishop Clark’s family and friends as they mourn and pray for his passing; May they be comforted by our faith in eternal life – a kingdom of light and peace in which we shall see the face of God.

“Eternal rest grant Bishop Clark, O Lord, and shine upon them everlasting light. Rest in peace. Amen.”
