Old World charm in scenic New Suffolk

It’s hard not to fall in love with New Suffolk. Away from all the main attractions, the sleepy hamlet is undoubtedly something special with sandy beaches on Peconic Bay, marinas, a quaint walkable downtown area, an oyster farm, waterfront restaurants and a community garden. Homes that come onto the real estate market here don’t last long, and we know this week’s Dream Home certainly won’t last.

The house itself is just as charming as the hamlet it is in, with original late 18th century features and clad in cedar clapboards with a perfect patina.

“I just love the cedar clapboard siding and cedar clapboard roof,” said Compass listing agent Diane Mollica. “It’s not common to see a cedar shingle roof as it adds an extra cost, but it adds so much character and a layer of richness to the home.” It’s natural and aged and blends in perfectly with the surroundings – the sea, the marina, the beach, it all connects.”

The two storey Victorian farmhouse dates from the late 1800’s and has three bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, an office and a staircase leading to an A-frame loft with stunning arched windows to be finished.

On the first floor there is a large kitchen with pantry and dining area, an oversized, bright living room with a bay window with original moldings and leading to a beautiful enclosed porch, a dining room with sliding glass doors leading to the backyard, and a downstairs bedroom with a fireplace.

Upstairs you will find two bedrooms, a full bathroom and the walk-in attic.

“The house is old and full of character and charm, like the original 8″ pine floor on the second floor,” Mollica told us. “The rooms are large, the layout is comfortable and the house is in good condition.”

There is also a bonus room which makes this property extra dreamy. A detached studio converted into a garage with an all white interior, large floorboards and a ladder to an attic. The open space is inspiring and peaceful, adding to the charm of the property.

“The canvas is there,” Mollica said. “The house is welcoming and immediately arouses curiosity about the past and what your future might inhabit.”

It is listed at $1,200,000.
