PITTSBURGH — The #25 Pitt Wrestling Team came back to the Victory Column and gained momentum to enter the ACC calendar with a dominant 37-0 dual shutout against Buffalo.

The win was Pitt’s second shutout of the season after beating Cleveland State 36-0 in the opener. It was the team’s second-biggest win of the season – only behind a 42-3 win at Brown.

“We wanted to show more energy and passion,” Pitt’s head coach said Keith Gavin said. “We did that tonight. We have a couple of guys who love wrestling so we have to show that consistently. It was a much better performance, which is easier to absorb from a disappointing loss. Now we have to build on that, handle success well and be ready for ACC duals in the coming weeks.”

The Panthers (6-2) got off to a quick start, winning bonus points in the first four games of the dual.

Colton Camacho at 125 pounds and No. 3 Cole Matthews at 141 each won by technical fall and No. 8 Mickey Philippi at 133 and No. 29 Tyler Badgett at 149 secured key decisions to give Pitt an early 18-0 advantage over the visiting Bulls (6-8, 2-0 MAC) of the Mid-American Conference.

Matthews, in particular, received a huge ovation from the crowd-filled Reynolds fans who watched his high school alma mater claim a 41-24 doubles win over Erie Cathedral Prep at Fitzgerald Field House before Pitt’s match.

Dayon Casto returned to Pitt’s lineup at 157 pounds and earned a 1-0 win. No. 30 also made decisions for the Panthers Holden Heller at 165, Luke Augustine at 174, Rece Heller at 184 over ranked opponent Giuseppe Hoose and Jake Slinger in heavyweight.

Pitt’s fifth and final bonus point win came via No. 2 Nino Bonaccorsi at 197 pounds thanks to his takedown clinic and four nearfall points in the 13-3 win.

The full results of Friday’s Pitt-Buffalo duals are available below.

The Panthers enter the ACC action next Friday with a duel in Virginia. The 7 p.m. contest in Charlottesville will be streamed on ACC Network Extra and via the ESPN app.
