10 things to do on the North Fork this January

Let’s face it, January often feels like an endless month of cold and dark and blah, but we’re here to help you beat those winter blues and get you off your couch. Here are 10 North Fork experiences to enjoy this month.

Do a polar bear jump

Join the North Fork Polar Bears for their first annual North Fork Polar Bear Plunge benefit on Sunday, January 29 at 10:00 am. Visit Truman’s Beach in East Marion to swim in the cold water, enjoy hot cocoa and fire pits while supporting CAST. Participation is free, but donations are welcome. Prizes for groups and individuals who raise the most money. Register here.

Attend a dinner party at Bedell Cottage

On Saturday, January 7th at 6pm, enjoy a 5-course meal prepared by Chefs Jonathan Shearman and Max Mohrmann of Fyr & Salt, paired with wines in small batches from Corey Creek Winemaker Marin Brennan. This unique dinner, hosted at Bedell Cottage, is limited to 10 seats. Tickets cost $200 per person and can be purchased here.

Learn more about the phases of the moon

To all the kids who are obsessed with the night sky, this event is for you. On Saturday, January 21 at 1:00 p.m., the Long Island Science Center is hosting a Saturday Science Workshop with a special focus on the phases of the moon. In this session, students will learn fun facts about the moon, how to recognize the 8 phases of the moon, and make their own moon phase to take home. The workshop costs $20 per student and includes admission to the museum. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Sign up here.

Dirty Paws Comedy Night is guaranteed to make you laugh. This North Fork Animal Welfare League benefit is scheduled for Friday, January 20 from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Greenport Harbor Brewing Company in Peconic. The 90-minute show will feature the Veterans Comedy Assult Team: Ray Negron, “Tugboat Manny” Bojuad and Quentin Davis. Tickets are $50 ($60 at the box office) and include a pint of beer or glass of wine. Buy your tickets here.

Keep a secret at Lieb Cellars

Okay, we promised not to give too much away, but just know that you won’t want to miss this special wine tasting offering. $50 per person and follow our lead but ssssshh.

Celebrate winter with the family at the Snow Ball

Hosted by the City of Riverhead’s Parks and Recreation Department, this family-friendly event is sure to get you and your crew in high spirits. Get ready and head to the hockey rink at Stotzky Park for the Snow BALL, an evening of dancing, festive karaoke, snacks, hot chocolate, themed games and fun for the whole family. This free event will take place on Friday, January 20th from 6:30pm – 8:30pm

create art and drink wine

See where your creativity (and a wine flight) can take you on this art workshop led by artist Verona Peñalba at the Lenz Winery in Peconic. At this workshop on Friday, January 27th from 6:00pm to 7:30pm, you will experiment with alcohol inks to create an abstract work of art. Catch a variety show in North Fork

Support local theater with the North Fork Community Theater’s 18th Annual Variety Show on Friday, January 6 and Saturday, January 7 from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sunday, January 8 , from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mix of singing, dancing, magic and more. General admission tickets are available at the door and are $20 per person. Proceeds go to scholarships for local high school seniors.

Drink wine and eat donuts

Pindar Vineyards has teamed up with North Fork Donut Company, aka NoFoDoCo, to pair three wines with three irresistible donuts. Three tasting experiences are planned for Saturday 29 January: 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00.

Strap on your skates

Who said roller skating is just for kids? Visit the GDC Roller Skate Rink in Greenport on Wednesdays all winter for an adults-only (21+) night of old-fashioned roller skating fun. Pay at the door, $10 entry includes skates.
