on the “CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATING RELEASE for a new freight train operation

USC § 10502(b). A 7-track siding is proposed on the Huntington-Smithtown border at the Covanta plant to load the incinerator ash onto a freight train that will transport it away from Long Island for disposal elsewhere. The IT is intended to operate at night and cross Larkfield Road with more carriages than a typical LIRR passenger train. Suggestions are being made to deliver fresh wood and cars to Long Island from far away locations and pick up outgoing sacks of ashes. Trucks are currently hauling tons of ash from Covanta to the Brookhaven landfill, which will close in 2024.

In 2017, Long Island’s trash was once at the center of the news as the bales of trash traveled from port to port on a barge, looking for a place to dump them. Most of it came from Islip, LI after being turned away from that city’s near-overflowing landfill.

in the meantime, local residents should be informed. Senator Gillibrand sits on the committee overseeing the Surface Transportation Board. She is up for re-election next year. Their office is on Pinelawn Road in Melville. Call 631 2492825 if you would like to be heard on this matter.

Win or lose, be aware that freight trains often whistle and you need a mandated quiet zone at night when the train is running.
